This course introduces students to personalization with static rendering by using React Server Components, the latest paradigm shift in React. By the end of this course, you'll have learned advanced Next.js concepts like server actions, static revalidation, client-server relaying, or partial prerendering, and you'll know when and how to apply different server rendering strategies in large, production-grade Next.js applications. This course mixes recent advanced concepts like Server Action and static rendering in a way that students won’t find in the documentation. However, they can only read and display data, not alter them.

Server Actions, on the other hand, allow to run operations such as creating, updating, or deleting data. Server Actions do not require any client-side JavaScript either to be triggered.

So, Server Actions are actions that run on the server. It’s great when a technology says what it does and does what it says!

The fun part is that they can be imported and used in Client Components too, if you need a more interactive behaviour for your app.

That's a positive consequence of deeply integrating the server part and the client part with React both sides, something that would be more complex to setup without React.

Thanks to Server Actions, our React components, be they Server or Client components, are not just able to display data, but also to update them or "mutate" them.

The "mutation" wording may come from the GraphQL ecosystem, where we distinguish guetting data (querying) and creating/updatating/deleting data (mutating).

RSCs are like a miniature server-side web applications, they can live autonomously while communicating efficiently with the other components they relate to.

Next will do some “magic” at build-time, so the server code of course never leaks in your client-code. You have may to mark the function with the “use server” directive, or put it in a separate file.

Server Actions were disabling static generation for pages in previous versions of Next.js. This was a bug, not intentional.

This is fixed in Next 14, remember to update your existing apps.

We have talked about security already for displaying data, but being able to update them might worry you even more, and that's totally fair.
