Among developers and architects, "continuous integration and delivery/deployment" (CI/CD for short) has increasingly become the norm for almost two decades. And while frontend development has gone through the framework revolution, going from design to code with the speed expected of CI/CD is still a pain. But it doesn't need to be!

This 10-module course is taught by Mikael Vesavuori, an architect and developer who has helped companies like Polestar redefine their technology and design processes, tooling and ways of working.

In the course, we will create a full component-based React-driven application with Figmagic, underpinned by Storybook, good documentation, and with CI and automated testing.

We will bring the dev-designer collaboration to its current state-of-the-art with a DevOps-inspired life cycle, which could be called “continuous design” (after continuous integration/deployment or CI/CD).

While there is a pre-defined, specific toolset that we’ll use, the end goal of the course is to teach you a wider perspective of what it means to work end-to-end with design systems. Nearly all individual tools are exchangeable: we’re more interested in the capabilities enabling our desired way-of-working than the specific tools chosen to get there.

This course is a comprehensive guide to building a React component library based on a well-architectured design system. You’ll create a full component-based React-driven application with Figmagic, underpinned by Storybook, good documentation, and with CI and automated testing. We've just covered how designers went from desktop publishing software in the '90s to today's software like Figma. However, even Figma lacks certain functionality. Luckily for us, Figma's very capable API makes it possible to build tooling around it to do many fantastic things that a non-API-driven tool could never support.

As we've talked about previously, design systems should use design tokens to atomically describe our system. Figma on its own doesn't offer any way to extract tokens. Additionally, Figma itself is completely unaware of this concept in the first place.

As I've hopefully made clear in the previous lessons, a common way to transport and transform tokens has been by using either specialized software or tools like plugins to manually export tokens into files.

The most straightforward way of handling tokens would be to store tokens as abstract values in a document, perhaps a JSON file. This additionally needs to be stored and synced somewhere. A workflow needs to exist so that you can use and update it, as well as any code that is being produced. In short, you will need to glue a lot to get this working end to end.

Designers may feel this is a technical and very indirect use of their time and abilities. Developers, however, would maybe have a fully qualified and usable format. This way, for all its mechanical flaws, hits close to the heart of many implementations.

This class of tooling tends to output generated code and redlines, specifications, or both. The code is often not good enough to use even as a starter. Relying only on specs that may not even use formats you need doesn't feel right in 2021.

Luckily for us, Figma's very capable API makes it possible to build tooling around it to do many fantastic things that a non-API-driven tool could never support.

We need to solve the following:

1.  We need to have a place where we define design tokens.
2.  We need a way to take the defined tokens and transport them into a useful format—most likely code.

What to do?

-   Old-school
-   Not programmable
-   Not possible to setup in an automated DevOps way
-   May not use formats and conventions you want/need

This class of tooling tends to output generated code and redlines, specifications, or both. The code is often not good enough to use even as a starter. Relying only on specs that may not even use formats you need doesn't feel right in 2021.

#### Frameworks: Diez, Amazon Style Dictionary...

-   Opinionated
-   Heavier integration

Although a powerful approach, these could be too abstract and wide since they ideally target multi-platform use-cases. You'd want to investigate deeper to ensure that you get more benefits than trade-offs, given the nature of a framework. These could face certain limitations, such as limited format outputs. Importantly, they lack in Figma integrations (as far as I know!), so you're still on your own for the token extraction phase.

I am careful about being negative toward these, but I find that they are just too much for most products.
