Among developers and architects, "continuous integration and delivery/deployment" (CI/CD for short) has increasingly become the norm for almost two decades. And while frontend development has gone through the framework revolution, going from design to code with the speed expected of CI/CD is still a pain. But it doesn't need to be!

This 10-module course is taught by Mikael Vesavuori, an architect and developer who has helped companies like Polestar redefine their technology and design processes, tooling and ways of working.

In the course, we will create a full component-based React-driven application with Figmagic, underpinned by Storybook, good documentation, and with CI and automated testing.

We will bring the dev-designer collaboration to its current state-of-the-art with a DevOps-inspired life cycle, which could be called “continuous design” (after continuous integration/deployment or CI/CD).

While there is a pre-defined, specific toolset that we’ll use, the end goal of the course is to teach you a wider perspective of what it means to work end-to-end with design systems. Nearly all individual tools are exchangeable: we’re more interested in the capabilities enabling our desired way-of-working than the specific tools chosen to get there.

This course is a comprehensive guide to building a React component library based on a well-architectured design system. You’ll create a full component-based React-driven application with Figmagic, underpinned by Storybook, good documentation, and with CI and automated testing. Let's revisit the plan a bit.

We are setting up a pipeline to supercharge our capability of producing design, turning it into code, and putting it out there in a live environment for real users to enjoy.

We need several things to be in place for this to happen:

-   **Infrastructure and services**, for example, GitHub. Most of this we have handled already.
-   **A codebase for the component library**, from which we can share our work.
-   **A codebase for some application** to use our components.

The two last parts are what we'll act on in this lesson.

## Install degit

[Degit](https://github.com/Rich-Harris/degit) is a convenient tool to do something that's always been bugging me: when you clone something, you don't necessarily want all the history and branches of whatever you cloned. Using `degit`, you only get a "shallow clone" of a repo containing the most recent code—perfect for downloading a template!

In your terminal or editor, we need to first install `degit` on your machine. Run `npm install -g degit` to make it globally available.

## The application

Next, navigate somewhere on your machine where it's okay to put the two codebases.

Then go ahead and clone the application repository:

npx degit mikaelvesavuori/acmecorp-potted-plants-app my-app
```

Feel free to change `my-app` to anything you like better.

### Verify functionality

We need to get things running. Run `npm install`. It will take a moment or two for it to install the dependencies.

Now, run `npm start` to fire up the Webpack development server. The app will start at the `/demo` path.

It may not yet be worthy of the [Awwwards](https://www.awwwards.com), but at least we have a skeleton structure in place.

Notice that most of our content is just configuration. The views in `src/views` will be modified later to create the overall UI using our components.
