In this book we will show you the some of the concerns of backend web development through the lens of Go.

It is taught by Nat Welch (formerly an SRE at Google) and Steve McCarthy (Etsy), two Go developers who have been writing software for more than 25 years combined.

In the course, we'll be covering the creation and concerns of a number of fundamental backend building blocks or larger applications:

- A key value server, including the use of distributed consensus algorithms
- A canary deployment server
- A real time chat service
- Testing and monitoring

## A Key-Value Server Like Redis And Memcached

n the early chapters of the book we learn how to build a Golang version of a key-value server that works in a manner similar to Redis and Memcached. You'll implement each of these features in Go:

- set and retrieve values by key
- adding persistent storage
- using data encodings such as `JSON` and `base64`
- testing the server with unit tests and integration tests

Consensus has been a problem for a long time. Leslie Lamport's 1989 paper 

 described an island named Paxos, and used it to describe a theoretical solution to distributed consensus. In 2001, Lamport got tired of people telling him his original paper and algorithm were too complicated, and rewrote it as 

. Hilariously, according to Lamport, that paper has a bug, and GitHub implementations often implement the algorithm incorrectly. That being said, Paxos is one of the most commonly-used algorithms in distributed systems. For example, Paxos is used by Zookeeper and Chubby.

# Consensus

Consensus has been a problem for a long time. Hilariously, according to Lamport, that paper has a bug, and GitHub implementations often implement the algorithm incorrectly. Another solution to Consensus comes to us from the infamous Bitcoin. In [his influential paper](https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf), Satoshi Nakamoto described and built the bitcoin blockchain. The blockchain is a log, or history, of every piece of data attached to it, along with a "proof of work" that lets every computer that reads or modifies the blockchain validate every piece of data in the blockchain. Imagine an array, where everyone agrees on each item in the array, and anyone who comes to look at the array can validate what everyone else is saying about the array. There are many similar but different implementations of this out there, including [Ethereum](https://ethereum.org/what-is-ethereum/) and others.
