I like to have a transaction per request as the default way of accessing the database from the backend. Not that it should be the only way possible, but it's a good default that creates a certain level of encapsulation.

## Connecting to the Database

I like to have a transaction per request as the default way of accessing the database from the backend. Not that it should be the only way possible, but it's a good default that creates a certain level of encapsulation.

tRPC has a concept of a `context` that is attached to routes which is accessible to middleware and procedures alike. We will create a new middleware function that establishes a transaction and commits it when the request is done, or rolls it back if there was an error.

But first, let's quickly make a function that gives you a database connection in general. You'll be using Knex again, so install that in the backend and create a file called `services/backend/src/getDb.ts`:
