In this course we'll dive into all the ways to modernize an existing React application - from tooling and linting, to testing and Hooks. React is a powerful, extremely popular JavaScript framework, but keeping applications up to date with all that it has to offer is tough - especially when dealing with the larger, enterprise-level business applications many developers are responsible for.

## Why this course

The newline Guide to Modernizing an Enterprise React application will cover everything you need to know to confidently work on a React application of any size, in any state, and leave it better than when you found it. 

While many React tutorials start with the latest version of React, or gloss over all the other things required to make sure apps vital to a company's success keep running, this course does not. In 54 lessons spanning 10 modules, it tackles head-on, the many things that must be considered when building and maintaining large, complex React apps.

### Part one: tooling and setup

The first part of this course will consist of getting familiar with our example application, and doing the behind-the-scenes work to set it up for success. 

We'll learn about why React Hooks came about and how to use them, how to upgrade an outdated React app successfully, and how to use tools like Volta, ESLint and Prettier to improve the app's code and development experience.

### Part two: refactoring the code

With our app configured for success, we'll get down to the business of refactoring Hardware Handler. 

I'll show you my strategy for converting class components to functional ones, and we'll go file-by-file keeping the app's functionality intact while upgrading it to use hooks - including custom hooks, and the Context API.

We'll add automated testing to our app using the widely accepted testing frameworks React Testing Library and Cypress.

Finally, I've included a special bonus module about how to incorporate design systems into an already existing application, and switch out components in a systematic way. Design systems and component libraries are quickly gaining ground - especially in big orgs with lots of apps and development teams. 

Being able to effectively use one is an important skill to learn.

Set up Prettier in the Hardware Handler app

Now that we've gotten an idea of what Prettier is and why it can benefit everyone on the team, from the newest developers to the experienced seniors, let's set it up in our application.

If you need a fresh copy of the sample app 

 we start to add Prettier and ESLint, it's available 

, we'll set it up so that any developer can rest assured knowing their Prettier is consistent with the project.

We're going to download it to the project as a dependency, so everyone using it has the same version in addition to having the same config files for it.

The first thing you'll want to do is open up the app in your IDE of choice and, in a new terminal window, 

 folder. From there, type the following command to save the 

    "concurrently": "^6.0.0",
    "prettier": "^2.2.1",
    "react": "^17.0.2",

With Prettier installed locally, we can move on to creating the file giving Prettier our preferred code formatting rules to follow.

At the root of the project, create a new file called 

Prettier is flexible and smart enough that either type of file, even with no file ending like 

, will be correctly interpreted and used within the project.

I prefer JSON syntax (YAML indentation is a little finicky for my tastes), so that's what I'm going to use to define my code formatting rules.

 file simple, and I'm still very pleased with the results it gives me.

# Why format your code?

### What is Prettier?

It works by removing all of the original styling from a project file and ensuring all the newly outputted code conforms to a consistent style.

Here are a few reasons code formatting with Prettier benefits the whole team.

-   It dramatically reduces the amount of time spent nit-picking over personal code style preferences.
-   It helps newcomers to the JavaScript language or project get up to speed quicker and debug issues caused by syntax errors faster.
-   It makes writing code easier — now there's no need to spend mental energy formatting code.
-   It's easy to adopt — the Prettier team worked hard to use the least controversial coding styles and went through many rounds of fixing all the edge cases to make getting started polished and painless.
-   It can clean up an existing codebase without being a massive undertaking.

And, luckily, Prettier is simple to add to a JavaScript project and almost as easy to set up with the VSCode extension so that it formats with next to no effort on our part. Let's get to it.

### Set up Prettier in the Hardware Handler app

Now that we've gotten an idea of what Prettier is and why it can benefit everyone on the team, from the newest developers to the experienced seniors, let's set it up in our application.

#### Create a .prettierrc file

At the root of the project, create a new file called `.prettierrc`.
