## Form Associated and ElementInternals

To establish why additional API is needed to utilize the `HTMLInputElement` embedded in the autonomous custom element in the context of a HTML form, inspect the DOM using Dev Tools and observe the `HTMLFormElement`. In Chrome, right-click on the input in the Storybook Canvas and select **Inspect**. In the Dev Tools Elements tab, select the form tag, right-click on the tag, and select **Store as global variable** from the dialog. This makes a global variable called `temp1` available in the Dev Tools Console. Type `dir(temp1)` in the Console and press Return. This should print an `Object` in the Console that allows you to inspect the `HTMLFormElement` DOM node.

Notice that no input elements are listed in the form element's node list usually located as the first properties of the form `Object`, despite there being an `HTMLInputElement` that is a child of the form. Only elements listed directly on the form `Object` can participate in the form. Since the `HTMLInputElement` is embedded in `ShadowDOM` and not part of the Light DOM like the form, the input cannot participate.

Transforming an autonomous custom element into a form-associated custom element requires minimal additions to the `TextInputComponent` class definition. To make the autonomous custom element a form-associated custom element, declare a new property: `formAssociated` prior to the constructor.

The `static` property `formAssociated` should be equal to `true`. This property is used so the browser can feature detect, resolving the custom element is a form-associated custom element.

After declaring `formAssociated`, inspect the DOM again, and you'll find the custom element has been added to the `HTMLFormElement` DOM node list and has an index of `0`.
