The editable table is a compound component that requires several discrete units of functionality to work seamlessly together in order to provide a rich user experience. In this chapter, you coded four different components:

## Summary

The editable table is a compound component that requires several discrete units of functionality to work seamlessly together in order to provide a rich user experience. In this chapter, you coded four different components: `TableCardComponent`, `TableComponent`, `TrComponent`, and `TdComponent` while using Storybook as both development environment and test bed. Compound components demand some architectural design, otherwise maintenance can become a nightmare. By abstracting reusable code into `class` and `method`, we were able to keep the implementation fairly DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself). A strict separation of concerns was further provided by the library developed in the previous chapter. Since high level component functionality was abstracted to library functions, we focused mainly on developing the features required by the editable table experience.

Compound components have several ways to communicate. HTML attributes, `CustomEvent` and `BroadcastChannel` all have their relative strengths and weaknesses. In this chapter, we used all three methods in the development of the table. Knowing whether to use one over the other can make or break the developer experience or cause performance issues for the end-user (forgetting to remove event listeners, for instance). HTML attributes and `CustomEvent` may have made a lot of sense but `BroadcastChannel` may have seemed out of place. [`BroadcastChannel`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/BroadcastChannel) was originally intended to provide a messaging system for communication across browser contexts. Using `BroadcastChannel` to overcome the limitations of event bubbling is an interesting solution, however, another specification that allows custom elements to pass data between components may be on the horizon. The [Context API Proposal](https://github.com/webcomponents-cg/community-protocols/blob/main/proposals/context.md) would replace the need for `BroadcastChannel` if the proposal makes it's way into mainstream browsers.
