## Scaffolding TextInputComponent

The process for scaffolding `TextInputComponent` looks remarkably similar to the `CardComponent` from the previous chapter. You'll define the custom element, register and export the custom element, import the custom element into a story, then define the story and template. From that point forward, you'll have a development environment for coding the features of the component and a way to test how the component behaves when focused, blurred, and disabled, and how the component displays user feedback during validation.

Make a new directory at `packages/component/src/input`.

In the input directory, make a new file and name it TextInput.ts.

Export a class called `TextInputComponent` that extends from `HTMLElement`, making sure to include a call to `super()`, which is necessary for every custom element, regardless of type. This new `class` should be exported for use in stories. Form-associated custom elements extend from the same `class` as autonomous custom elements, `HTMLElement`, which allows them to employ Shadow DOM.

Next, declare the `ShadowRoot` by calling `this.attachShadow`, leaving the mode `open`. Create a template element and clone the template to the `ShadowRoot` using `template.content.cloneNode(true)`.

## Structure the content

`TextInputComponent` should have a `HTMLInputElement` in the component template, mainly because we don't want to duplicate all the functionality of `HTMLInputElement`. We can't extend `TextInputComponent` from the `HTMLInputElement class` and expect to also leverage form-associated custom elements, which require `HTMLElement`. If `TextInputComponent` extended from the `HTMLInputElement class`, it would be a customized built-in element and lose the ability to incorporate Shadow DOM or become a form-associated custom element.
